In Greek mythology, the first mortal woman, sent to earth by the gods as punishment for the theft of fire by Prometheus. She brought with her a box (Pandora's box) containing all human ills. When in curiosity she opened the lid, the ills escaped into the world, leaving only Hope, which had been at the bottom of the box. See EPIMETHEUS. [<Gk., all–gifted]
