(fə·nog′rə·fē) noun
1. The art or science of writing by sound; especially, the art of representing words according to a system of sound elements that reduces their graphic reproduction to the simplest form: a style of shorthand which owes its principal development to Isaac Pitman, of Bath, England, upon whose alphabet the majority of the existing stenographic systems are based.
2. The art of representing articulate sounds by marks or letters.
3. The art of making or using phonographs; the mechanical recording and reproduction of sounds or speech.
