1. The act of acclaiming; that which is expressed in the act; a shout, as of applause.
2. A loud and general viva-voce vote of approval, as in public assembly.
3. In the Roman Catholic Church, the elevation to an ecclesiastical dignity by the unanimous voice of the electors, without voting: one of the ways of electing a pope.
4. Music The responsive chant in antiphonal singing.
