A colorless inflammable liquid derived from crude petroleum by fractional distillation and consisting of various hydrocarbons. It is used as a solvent for fats, resins, etc., to cleanse clothing, and as a motor fuel: also called petroleum spirit. Sometimes confused with benzene. Also ben′zin (-zin), ben·zo·line (ben′zə·lēn).
