1. In the Church of England, an elected lay officer who assists in the administration of a parish, and acts as its legal representative.
2. In the Protestant Episcopal Church, one of two elected lay officers of a vestry who, with the other vestrymen, administer the property and temporal affairs of the parish, and represent the congregation on certain occasions.
3. A long–stemmed clay pipe. Also church warden.
