Definition of: ground-hog day

February 2, Candlemas: according to rural tradition, if the ground hog, emerging after hibernation, sees his shadow on this day, he retreats to his hole, thus indicating six weeks more of winter; if he does not see his shadow it is a sign of an early spring.
