(hēth) noun
1. A low, hardy, evergreen shrub of a large genus (Erica) with narrow, usually whorled leaves and small tubular or globose, rose, white, or yellow flowers. Two of the most durable species are the fine-leaved heath (E. cinerea) and the cross-leaved heath (E. tetralix).
2. The common heather.
3. Brit. An area of open land overgrown with heath or with coarse herbage.
4. In Coverdale's and later versions of the Old Testament, a desert plant; identified both as tamarisk and savin. Jer. xvii 6; xlviii 6. [OE hath]
