1. In Greek mythology, five daughters of Atlas whom Zeus set among the stars.
2. Astron. A cluster of five stars in Taurus, including Aldebaran, shaped like the letter V: when they rose with the sun they were considered to be a sign of rain by ancient astronomers. [<L <Gk.,? <hyein rain] Also Hy·ads (hī′adz).
