Definition of: Interstate Commerce Act
An act passed by Congress, and approved February 4, 1887, which established a commission of five (since increased to eleven) members to regulate commerce between States when carried by common carriers, as by railroad, vessel, motor vehicle, and pipeline (except water pipes). The Interstate Commerce Commission executes and enforces the act in the public interest, promotes safe service and conditions, prevents unjust rates and discriminatory practice, etc.
