(ī′ō)
In Greek mythology, the daughter of Inachus, who was loved by Zeus and changed by him into a heifer to escape the jealous wrath of Hera, who set hundred–eyed Argus to watch her; when Argus was killed by Hermes on Zeus's orders, Hera sent a gadfly which drove Io to Egypt where she regained her human form.
