Definition of: Japanese beetle

A small green and brown beetle (Popillia japonica) with a metallic luster introduced into this country from Japan and first noted in 1916. The adults eat the leaves and fruits of various plants; the larvae feed on grass roots. See illustration under INSECT (injurious).
