A white, earthlike calcium oxide, CaO. It is produced artificially by calcining calcium carbonate, as limestone, marble, or seashells, yielding the anhydrous calcium–oxide quicklime, which with water forms slaked lime. It also readily absorbs moisture from the air, forming air–slaked lime.
