Definition of: Mississippi scheme
A plan formulated by the Scottish economist, John Law, in which a company was formed to exploit and monopolize ail the land drained by the Mississippi, the Ohio, and the Missouri rivers. Subsequent mismanagement of minting rights which were granted the company led to wild speculation, panic, and inflation, causing the failure of the company in 1720. Also called Mississippi bubble.
