In Greek mythology, a musician who could charm beasts and even rocks and trees by his singing to the lyre. When his wife Eurydice died he was permitted to lead her back to earth from Hades provided he would not look at her: he failed in the test and was later killed by the Thracian women who were enraged at his mourning for Eurydice.
