A gadoid food fish (genera Pollachius and Theragra), resembling the true cod, but with the lower jaw projecting and barbel obsolete. P. pollachius is the common European pollack, P. virens, the green pollack or coalfish of the North Atlantic, and T. chalcogramma, of the North Pacific. Also spelled pollock. [Origin uncertain]
