1. Any of a large, widely scattered genus (Smilax) of shrubby or herbaceous plants having net–veined leaves, dioecious flowers in umbels, and globular fruit, especially S. aristolochiifolia, a source of sarsaparilla: also called catbrier, greenbrier.
