Definition of: snapping beetle

An elaterid beetle which by a quick, snapping movement of its body is able to right itself when on its back; especially, the eyed elater (Alaus oculatus) of eastern North America: also called click beetle, skipjack. For illustration see under INSECTS (injurious).
