Definition of: solid state physics

That branch of physics which deals with the physical properties of solids, especially as exhibited by atoms and molecules when in the solid state. It includes the study of crystal structure, elasticity, and friction, semiconductors and plastics, defects in materials, thermal properties, and a wide range of electrical and magnetic phenomena.
