In the religions of some primitive agricultural peoples, a deity conceived of as life–giving and beneficent, and symbolized by the sun, as the ancient Egyptian Ra, ancient Irish Lug, Inti of the Incas, etc.: not to be confused with personifications of the sun in many cosmogonic myths (Greek Helioṡ, for instance) which are mere explanatory etiological tales and do not posit a sun cult.
