1. In the U. S. postal system, a classification of mail that includes all miscellaneous printed matter but not newspapers and periodicals legally entered as second class.
2. A classification of accommodations on some ships and trains, usually the cheapest and least luxurious available; formerly, on a ship, steerage; also, the passengers traveling in this classification.
