1. An indurated, leafless spine or sharp-pointed process from a branch.
2. One of various other sharp processes, as the spine of a porcupine.
3. Any of various thorn-bearing shrubs or trees; especially, any of a genus (Crataegus) of rosaceous plants, as the hawthorn.
4. Anything or anyone that occasions discomfort, pain, or annoyance; a vexation.
5. The name of the Old English rune ρ; also, the corresponding Icelandic character: equivalent originally to th, both voiced and unvoiced, but finally only to the unvoiced sound, as in thorn, from which it derives its name. Y or y is sometimes used as a makeshift for it in early English, as in the contraction y^e. Compare EDH.
