1. The twenty–second letter of the English alphabet; ultimately from Phoenician vau, vocalized by the Greeks into upsilon, and used by the Romans in the form V with the value of a semivowel (w) and, later, a consonant (v). In English it was used interchangeably with the character u until fairly modern times. Compare U, W.
