1. Any of several small singing birds (genus Motacilla), named from their habit of jerking the tail; especially, the yellow wagtail (M. flava) of Asia and eastern Alaska.
2. Any of certain American birds that wag the tail when walking on the ground, especially the ovenbird and the water thrush.
