1. A dwelling or lodge of the North American Indians of Algonquian stock, used in the area from Canada to North Carolina and in the Great Lakes regions: commonly an arbor–shaped or conical framework of poles covered with bark, rush matting, or hides.
2. By extension, a family of Indians.
3. A dwelling or lodge of North American Indians of other than Algonquian stock: a misuse by early travelers.
4. Slang A public building used for political gatherings, mass meetings, etc.
