What does one for the road mean?
What does “one for the road” mean? My Dad says this. But then he says lots of stupid stuff.

It means that you give something to someone when they’re heading out, so that they can have it while they’re going home (or going somewhere else), or it could be something they have right before they leave that will tide them over while they are travelling (i.e. smoking one last cigarette before heading out on the road). Thus, they can enjoy “one for the road.” It’s often used in reference to drinks, but it could be used for just about anything.
