Definition of: aniline
(an′ə·lin, -līn) noun
A colorless oily compound, C6H5NH2, the base from which many of the coal-tar dyes, resins, and varnishes are made. It may be regarded as derived from ammonia, NH3, by replacing one molecule of hydrogen with the radical phenyl, C6H5, and is hence considered chemically as phenylamine. Aniline was originally obtained in the distillation of indigo, but is now chiefly made from nitrobenzene.
—adjective Made of, derived from, or pertaining to aniline. Also an·i·lin (an′ə·lin). [ < ANIL + -INE]
