1. A colorless, oily, liquid compound, CCl3·CHO, with a penetrating odor, obtained variously, as by the action of chlorine on alcohol.
2. A white crystalline pungent compound, CCl3,CHO·H2O, used medicinally as a hypnotic, etc., which in large doses acts as a poison, paralyzing the heart: also chloral hydrate. [<CHLOR(INE) + AL(COHOL)]
