Definition of: commodore

(kom′ə·dôr, -dōr) noun
1. In the U.S. Navy, an officer next above a captain and next below a rear admiral: a rank no longer in use since World War II.
2. In the British Navy, the commander of a squadron or division of a fleet, often having the temporary rank and pay of a rear admiral.
