1. The act of dividing.
2. A part; section.
3. Separation; disagreement; discord.
4. That which separates, divides, or makes different.
5. Math. The operation of finding how often one quantity is contained in another, or the ratio of one to another: opposed to multiplication.
6. Mil. A large tactical and administrative unit. In the U.S. Army it is larger than a brigade and smaller than a corps and is under the command of a major general.
7. In the U.S. Navy, a group of three battleships, four cruisers, or two aircraft–carriers, under the command of a rear admiral; or four destroyers, commanded by a captain; also, a portion of a ship's company.
