A painful and potentially fatal syndrome due to the release of bubbles of nitrogen from solution in the blood and tissues following a too-rapid transition from high pressure to atmospheric pressure, such as may occur in high-altitude flying, underwater diving, and tunnel construction. Also called aeroembolism, the bends, caisson disease, tunnel disease.
