1. Theol. A doctrine or system of teachings of religious truth as maintained by the Christian church or any portion of it; hence, a statement of religious faith or duty formulated by a body possessing or claiming authority to decree or decide.
2. Doctrine asserted and adopted on authority, as distinguished from that which is the result of one's own reasoning or experience; a dictum.
