Definition of: Gram's method

A method for the differentiation and classification of bacteria which depends upon the reaction to treatment, first with aniline gentian violet, then with an iodine solution, followed by immersion in alcohol. Those bacteria which are decolorized by the alcohol are Gram-negative, and those which retain the purple dye are Gram-positive, [after Hans C. J. Gram]
