Similar to the spinal structure of a herring; especially, laid out, arranged, woven, or stitched in rows of parallel lines with the lines of adjoining rows slanting in opposite directions: said of masonry, textiles, etc.

1. To ornament with or arrange in herringbone stitches, patterns, etc.
2. To walk on skis (up an incline) with the toes pointed out: so called from the herringbone tracks made by the skis.
