Definition of: Homestead Act
A Congressional enactment of 1862, later revised and extended, which enables a settler to acquire 160 acres of free public land providing he reside on, cultivate, and improve his land for five years (in 1912, reduced to three years), after which time he may obtain full title and unrestricted ownership. In less fertile areas, 320 or even 640 acres were later allowed.
