(j′bə·lē) noun
1. In Jewish history, every fiftieth year, from the entrance of the Hebrews into Canaan. At its recurrence, all Hebrew slaves were emancipated and all alienated lands reverted to their former owners or their heirs.
2. In the Roman Catholic Church, a year of special indulgence, appointed by the Pope, during which compliance with certain conditions of confession, communion, good works, etc., will secure remission from the penal consequences of sin: also called Annus Sanctus.
3. The fiftieth or the twenty–fifth anniversary of an event; also, the celebration of this.
4. Any season of rejoicing or festivity.
