1. Any plant of the genus Rubia (family Rubiaceae); especially, an Old World shrubby, perennial, hairy herb (R. tinctorum), resembling the common bedstraw.
2. A brilliant red tinctorial extract from the root of the madder plant, used in dyeing and as a pigment in many lakes: the coloring principle, alizarin, is now made also synthetically.
