The common European magpie (P. pica or caudata) has iridescent black plumage with white scapulars, belly, sides, flanks, and inner web of flight feathers: often tamed and taught to speak words, and noted for its thievishness. The American magpie (P. hudsonia) is a variety of the European magpie. P. nuttali is the yellow–billed magpie of California.
