(mīl) noun
A measure of distance (see STATUTE MILE below) in the United States, Great Britain, and Ireland, and in all British possessions; remotely derived from the ancient Roman mile, which was about 1,620 yards or 4,860 feet.
—air mile A nautical mile by air.
—geographical, nautical, or sea mile One sixtieth of a degree of the earth's equator, or 6,080.2 feet. That of the United States is now the international nautical mile, equal to 6,076.103 feet or 1,852 meters.
