1. A tree or shrub of the genus Myrtus; especially, M. communis of southern Europe, originally from Asia. It is a bushy shrub or small tree with glossy evergreen leaves, fragrant white or rose-colored flowers, and black berries.
2. One of various other plants like the common myrtle. Among the ancients it was sacred to Venus.
