1. Any of certain small, plump–bodied, Old World, gallinaceous game birds of genera Perdix, Alectoris (synonym Caccabis), etc.
2. Any of certain other similar birds, often so called, as the ruffed grouse of the northern United States and the bobwhite of the South. Compare QUAIL¹.
