(rith′əm) noun
1. Movement characterized by regular measured or harmonious recurrence of stress, beat, sound, accent, or motion: the rhythm of the pulse, the rhythm of moving oars.
2. The musical property dependent on the regular succession of accents or tone-impulses; accent-movement or accent-structure; also, a system or kind of accentuation as determined by the makeup of the accentual divisions.
3. In poetry, the cadenced flow of sound as determined by the succession of long and short syllables (classical rhythm), or accented and unaccented syllables (modern rhythm). When definitely measured by feet or bars or periods, which make lines or verses, it becomes meter.
4. A metrical foot or measure.
