—san′guine.ness n. Synonyms: animated, ardent, buoyant, confident, enthusiastic, hopeful. Sanguine, from the same root as sanguinary, came to denote full–blooded or plethoric, hence, ardent, confident, hopeful, because these qualities were supposed to be associated with fullness of blood.
