Of these three proper adjectives, the form Scotch developed in the dialects of the Midland and southern England, and is accepted even in Scotland as applying to Scotch plaid, Scotch terriers, Scotch whisky, etc.; in Scotland and in northern England, however, the forms Scots and Scottish (earlier Scottis) prevailed, and are preferred as applying to the people, culture, and institutions of Scotland: Scots or Scottish English, the Scottish church. This distinction is now widely accepted.
