1. One who or that which sets.
2. One of a breed of medium–sized, silky–coated, lithe bird dogs of great intelligence, originally trained to indicate the presence of game birds by crouching, now by standing rigid.
—English setter A setter, white, or white marked with black, tan, yellow, or orange, trained since the 16th century to find and point game. The most famous British strains, the Laveracks and the Llewellins, are popular in field trials and bench shows.
—Gordon setter A setter having a black coat marked with tan, chestnut, or red, probably crossbred with black–and–tan spaniels: named for the original breeder, the Duke of Gordon, and used especially for cover shooting.
