Definition of: States' Rights party

A political party founded during May, 1948, in Jackson, Miss., by southern Democrats who were opposed to the civil rights program of the regular Democratic party. It nominated Gov. James Strom Thurmond of South Carolina as its candidate for president. Popularly called Dixiecrats.
