1. One of a pair of slender poles made with a projection to support the foot above the ground in walking.
2. A tall post or pillar used as a support for a dock or building.
3. Any of several long–legged, three–toed birds (genera Himantopus and Cladorhynchus) related to the avocet, inhabiting ponds and fresh– and salt–water marshes. The American stilt (H. mexicanus) is mostly white with back, wings, crown, and nape a greenish black. The Old World stilt (H. candidus) is white except for wings and back.
4. Scot. A crutch.
