1. An object presenting a surface that may be used as a mark or butt, as in rifle or archery practice; anything that is shot at.
2. One who or that which is made an object of attack or a center of attention or observation; a butt: He was the target of the crowd's sneers.
3. A small, variously shaped and colored signal, usually placed near a railroad track, to indicate the position of the switches.
4. The vane or sliding sight on a surveyor's rod.
5. Electronics That electrode of a vacuum tube on which cathode rays are focused and from which X–rays are emitted.
