1. A proposition.
2. Specifically, a formal proposition, advanced and defended by argumentation.
3. A formal treatise on a particular subject, especially, a dissertation presented by a candidate for an academic degree.
4. In early prosody, that part of a foot which had the ictus or stress.
5. In later Roman usage and in modern prosody, the unaccented part of a foot; also, the depression of the voice in pronouncing it. See ARSIS.
6. Logic An affirmative proposition; a premise or postulate, as opposed to a hypothesis.
