Definition of: Thomism
(tō′miz·əm, thō′-) noun
The doctrine of St. Thomas Aquinas, who attempted to combine Aristotelian metaphysics, ontology, logic, and method with Christian theology into one comprehensive system, including theology, natural philosophy, esthetics, ethics, psychology, and politics. He held that human reason was the faculty by which men apprehended many truths, but that the divinely revealed truths necessary for salvation could be known only through faith; that reason was distinct from faith, though not opposed to it when rightly used; and that reason served faith by preparing men's minds to receive revealed truth, by expounding and systematizing that truth, and by defending it against attack. The system of dogmatic theology constructed by St. Thomas remains the standard within the Roman Catholic Church, and has had a wide influence in many other communions.
