(tun) noun
1. Any of several large measures of weight; particularly, the short ton of 2000 pounds avoirdupois, commonly used in the United States and Canada; the long ton of 2240 pounds of Great Britain; or the metric ton of 1000 kilograms.
2. A unit for reckoning the displacement or weight of vessels, 35 cubic feet of sea water weighing about one long ton: called displacement ton.
3. A unit for reckoning the freight–carrying capacity of a ship, usually equivalent to 40 cubic feet of space but varying with the cargo: called freight ton, measurement ton.
